USDA Nutrient Database

This is definitely a handy site. It gives nutrient information on all sorts of food. I just typed in “rice” and got 114 results, including baby food. It even includes common name brand foods like Kellogg’s and Healthy Choice. I selected HEALTHY CHOICE Chicken Enchilada Suprema in Green Chili Sauce, Mexican Style Rice, Corn Medley, frozen meal from the list. The results shows values for Water, Protein, Fat, Carbohydrate,Fiber, Sugars, Minerals, Calcium, Iron, and Vitamins.

This is definitely a helpful site and I’m sure I’ll be using it a lot.

We all know this stuff

I just read some small steps for weight loss success at a government website. There’s 119 hints, and some of the hints include:

  • Walk to work.
  • Use fat free milk over whole milk.
  • Do sit-ups in front of the TV.
  • Walk during lunch hour.
  • Drink water before a meal.
  • Walk instead of driving whenever you can.
  • Increase the fiber in your diet.
  • Walk to your place of worship instead of driving.
  • Walk kids to school.
  • Get a dog and walk it.
  • Drink diet soda.
  • Replace Sunday drive with Sunday walk.

Personally, I think that someone went a bit overboard with the suggestion to “walk”. :-D Overall, the suggestions are okay, nothing spectacular. But the suggestions are things most of us already know, but I wonder if we all practice them? If we do practice them, are they not working? If we don’t practice them, is there a reason why we don’t? I think I’m going to go through this list and see which ideas I use, and which ones I don’t.
